Choosing the Right Heels for Dance: Tips and Recommendations

Choosing the right heels for dance is important not only for comfort and style, but for injury prevention and supporting your body in performing proper technique. Here are 3 tips for choosing the right heels for dance!

  1. Choose the right height for you. Heels dance is not a competition of who can dance in the highest stilettos! You want to make sure that you are able to rise up onto your tip toes while you are in your shoes and have the heel of your shoe lift off of the floor. The higher your heels are, the more weight you are putting into the ball of your foot, which means the more ankle strength you will need. Please start with a lower heel and work your way into a higher heel if you so desire so that you have the time to properly train your feet and ankles!

  2. Give your toes some freedom! You should be able to spread your toes out - this might mean an open toed shoe or a boot with a wider toe. You want to be able to grip your toes into the floor and properly use them to support you in your movement. Your feet will act as your foundation for turns, kicks, and quick movements and you want to be secure in your foot placement as you move.

  3. Support your ankles. Choose a shoe that feels secure, but not too tight. A character shoe is a great middle ground if you are looking for something that doesn’t look like a boot - they are designed for dancers, with a modest heel height and an ankle strap.
